CAUTION! Aftermarket Oil Caps

I think Andy/Peaces is the only other one in the club with the MOSS MINI metal oil cap, but I thougt I would let everyone know. They suck. Really. My wife has had my MINI all this week, as her car is in the shop (again). (I get my dad's Buick Regal. It's a couch, but it's a couch with a huge honkin torque-y engine). After she got home today, she told me that one of the warning lights blinked rather quickly, and it turned out it was the Oil Pressure Warning lamp. I opened the hood, and not only was there a nice spray of oil in my engine that origonated from the oil cap (the after-market one), but the metal top of the cap itself was about to fall off. And it did. Inside the engine bay of a slightly warm MINI. Which was, in no way, fun to retreive. So, screw them in for car shows, but I wouldn't be driving around with one anymore. Needless to say, I was quite happy that I remembered where I kept the OEM oil cap.

Also, if you have not checked your oil in a while, do so. Not so you check your oil mind you, just so you keep the dip stick moving around. It took me a good five minutes of twisting and pulling to get mine out. And then it would not go back in untill I lubed up the actual dip stick section, and the o-ring section at the top. Not fun.

Erik...

I guess that's what we get when we buy aftermarket and not BMW parts. That's why that and my fire extinguisher are the only non BMW parts on my car. I'd rather pay a little more for piece of mind.

Actually mine is a power steering cap but good advice nonetheless.

Thanks for the reminder! It's been over a month since I checked my oil. My father is obsessive about checking his oil, so I try not to be that bad. (It's only been 4 days since I checked my tire pressures, though...)

I have the stock oil cap, but during last May's pulley party when Randy Webb was pretending to put a pulley in my Cooper engine, he noticed that my oil cap was not put on straight after the last oil change. And I'd been driving it for at least 5000 miles like that. So check the cap after your oil changes, and check the oil levels after oil changes & regularly. I always check mine before any road trips.
