Walkie Talkies???

Hey everyone!  I was wondering if anyone has any opinions they'd like to share about walkie talkies.  I got a set for Christmas from my parents but I'm not sure I am going to keep them.  I kind of wanted ones with VOX, was hoping I could make some mods and also be able to use them in my motorcycle helmet as well as on road trips in the car.  I saw many of you had them when we caravanned to Towne for the benefit for Dan.  Any input/advice would be great!

Thanks! Jenea

I have Motorola FRS/GMRS radios, 5920 model I think (or something near that number...) They have the vox feature but I haven't used it on runs, since it would also pick up any in car conversation or music. (Or, God forbid, if I'm singing along with the music...)

Radios really do add a lot to the runs, if anyone has thoughts about buying them they are handy. I even use them occaisonally on non-Mini events!

I recall that Dave had the VOX with a boom mike.  He had to keep the mike out of the way of his nose, as the breathing would cause it to turn on...

We really like them when we have to take two cars on a long trip. Very simple to use and cheaper than a cell phone call.

The hands free mic was ok as long as you dont breathe, sneeze or turn on the radio.

But, my radios are inexpensive Motorola T5500 "Talkabout" radios. Probably around 30 bucks a pair. maybe a better radio/mic combo would work better.
