Minis on the Dragon 2011

Anybody going to this event besides me?  April 27th thru May 1st.  I went last year and it was a blast.  It's fun driving the dragon even at the speed limit.

If you haven't checked the SOMC site, do so.
There are a few going from there, and will be passing thru Buffalo.
You could hook up with them on the way down.
MOTD is definitely on my to do list, just not this year.

Thanks jrbond007.  They're heading to Detroit first and driving down with those guys.  That's a little out of the way for me.  I'd like to be down there by Wed midday.  I drove solo last year.  I have no problem doing it again.  Just thought I'd link up with someone who was going down.

Detroit!!!. Talk about a little out of the way!
Down 79 & beyond is a more direct route.
But I suppose more time motoring in a Mini isn't a bad thing.

I think it needs to be emphasized that those 318 curves in 11 miles are smack dab in the middle of the smokey mountains.  I'm not exaggerating when I say my windshield was filled with roadway as some of the curves banked and ascended at the same time.

And the switchbacks...those glorious glorious switchbacks.

And spending 5 days with 500 other Miniacs motoring around is always a good time.

And midnight on the dragon is quite the experience.

Looks like a totally awesome event, what speeds do you get to on the dragon.  I'm thinking of buying a GoPro video camera any suggestions?

Posted speed is 30.  On many of the runs the speeds got up to 45 to 50.  There are some who go beyond that.  There are troopers on the TN side that regularly hand out tickets so you have to be careful.  I have in car footage riding in Way Motor Works' race prepared Mini after the brakes and tires had been heated up...and that's all I can legally say about that.

I own a small video production company and do lot's of commercial work with professional cameras.  I have a GoPro HD and am really impressed with the video quality from such a small, inexpensive camera.  So much so that I plan on buying 2 more.  I just landed a freelance job with MC2 magazine and will be using it for some of my footage at this event as well as others.

There are a few drawbacks.  1. Audio capture is horrendous.  I've been reading that the latest versions have upgraded, "professional" audio, but I haven't been able to verify the quality.

2. They don't come with a viewfinder or preview screen so you don't know what you're capturing.  You have to wait until you connect to a computer to find out if your footage is any good.  However, they now sell an LCD attachment, but it costs extra.

3. You don't know how much you can record.  I have an 8gb card and can at least record 38 minutes of 1080p.  How much more can I get on the card?  I don't know yet.
