TOY DRIVE '10 - Where & When?

Hey all you sleighbell totin' Motorin' MINIacs!

The proverbial frost is on the pumpkin and though we are having some bodacious late fall weather, that's bound to come to a close soon enough, replaced by that white, fluffy stuff that kicks off the annual Toy Drive seaon! Huddle up, 'cuz we've got to start plannin' for the biggest donation yet! (If you haven't participated in one of these events, check out past threads to get up to speed.)

The past couple years we've donated to Gary the Pirate's Toy Fund in Rochester (http://piratetoyfund.org/), according to the website "the only nonprofit organization in the country dedicated to donating toys year round to children in need in our community." This toy drive is unique in that everything that's donated stays in the community for local kids in need. We've loaded MINI sleighs and delivered to Gary's warehouse the last two years.

When I started this event two years ago, I 'toyed' with the idea of finding a simlar outlet for our goodwill in the Buffalo area and alternating donations by year between Buffalo and Rochester to reflect (in general) our membership area. That is still a possibility if we can find a worthy cause in Buffalo.

In Rochester, our group has benefitted greatly from our member Mighty Mo and the participation and hospitality of the Rochester Fire Department he works with. We have been able to stage from the Engine 12 Firehouse on Wisconsin Street. We've even been lucky enough to have a fire engine escort from the firehouse to Gary's warehouse, allowing us to Motor as a group to our destination. We've had great participation from MINIacs and the Rochester Fire Department!

All that said, our arrangement with Gary last year was a little less than satisfactory, at least for me. As opposed to the first year where we made a 'human chain' and passed gifts up the line to the warehouse, last year Gary had each MINI full of gifts drive up,  offload, and get outta the way. It was very efficient, but lost a little of the spirit of the event in my opinion. Of course, Gary and his team are extremely busy that time of year so maybe he was responding to the stress and weariness that comes from being happy for so many weeks in a row (I know I couldn't do that!). And of course, this is really about the kids who benefit more than anything else.

In the past, we've done this event on the second or third Saturday in December and of course, we're always subject to nasty weather, which can complicate things even more. (The first year, Mighty Mo had to plow a lane through Gary's lot or we wouldn't have been able to make our delivery!) Obviously, the delivery date has to work for the recpient so we have to work with them on when they can accept us. After the event, whoever's wanted has gathered at the Old Toad for a bite and a swig and a little holiday cheer.

So....the questions we need to resolve by this time next week (11/22) are:
1.  Do we want to continue donating to Gary the Pirate's Toy Fund in Rochester?
2.  Do we want to find another worthy charity in Rochester for this year?
3.  Do we want to explore / find a worthy charity in the Buffalo area? (If so, we need to make arrangements with them, which I am willing to do, but I would welcome suggestions!)
4.  Lastly, what date would we want to shoot for so that people have sufficient time to conspire with co-workers, friends, and family to collect several MINIs full of loot for the cause?

Please use the forum to kick ideas around this week. Let's see what people think so we can be prepared and well on our way by Thanksgivng! Thanks in advance for your hearty and hefty participation--it's a great way to give something back to our communities!

1- Let's give it one more go with Gary
2- Not this year
3- Not this year (a bit late in the season)
4- December 18 works best for me and my wife.

I will be whenever and wherever we want to go. I am going to work on getting the student association here on board for donations!

ETA: Obviously, if we are in Rochester we need to end at the Old Toad!

I'm open to anything. I don't have a suggestion outside ye olde "happy" pirate (though we didn't see said "happiness" in excess last year). At this point, I'm flexible on the weekend, but do want to get the word out to my coworkers before black Friday so that they can find toys on their shopping journeys! :)

The student association is going to be collecting toys from the students and staff here for us!!!

Our semester ends on 12/16 so if our dropoff date is the 18th we will have the most amount of time to take collections.

That's excellent Nicole--thanks!

I'm hoping more people weigh in on this but I can certainly go with Gary the Pirate and mid-late December...let's see if we get some more input.

Dear Tedscar,

This will be my first year to participate in this event and I look forward to it. The weekends are flexible and Saturday afternoons are better. Having never been in a mini parade, I can only assume it is pretty fun.

As far as worthy charities, there are many - but I am wondering if timing would prevent us from giving to any other than Gary the HP. Maybe look at some charities for next year who may not get as much publicity, such as kids in hospital psych wards, battered women, pet adoption shelters, stuff like that.

Thank you for organizing this, Tedscar. See you on the road.

I might be interested in attending. I had long been a supporter of the Eddie Meath Christmas Fund which I believe The Pirate Toy Fund took over for. We are open on the weekends so long as there is no snow. Of course I would have to dust off the Mini because it's already in hibernation. I will try to ask a few people for some donations and hopefully join in. I'll keep an eye on the thread for details.

One suggestion for a charity would be the Make A Wish Foundation of WNY. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what they do, their mission is to provide strength, hope, and joy to children with life-threatening illnesses.

I've been a wish granter with them since 2007 and we always bring toys to the wish children and their siblings on our initial visit when we find out what the child is going to wish for.

One advantage of going with Make A Wish is that they have an office in Buffalo as well as Rochester NY. If this is an option you want to explore (either for this year or another year), I would be happy to make the introduction.

As for weekends, the 18th is better for me.

Great to have everyone aboard! This is far less people than have participated / shown interest in past years. We didn't lose our spirit of giving, did we? It's looking like we'll be doing something on the 18th. I will call Gary tomorrow and ask him about donating there again this year.

Stay tuned...

OK Mateys, here's the deal, at least the most pressing part!

I've been in touch with Gary's office and we've confirmed delivery of toys from MINI Club of WNY on Saturday, December 18, at 1:00 PM!

I will chase down all the other details in the next couple weeks and I have no doubt we'll exceed last years' contribution, which exceeded the previous year's. My science friend tells me 'It takes two points to make a line' and ours giving line is increasing every year!

So for now, you can plan on delivery at PTF on 12/18; 1:00 PM and probably a zippity drive over to the Old Toad afterward. More soon...

Thanks, everyone, for your help--see ya on the 18th!

Well, it has been awhile since I have talk to you all. It's been busy keeping my crews working with all the fall cleanup yards to do and then I am working full time at Charlotte selling TV's. Oh that's right I am with the RFD full time too.
Now the bad news. MiniMo has moved away. Yep, Maureen took it with her. I am not working at the firehouse that day but I should be able to make arrangements for the escort. Staging at Engine 12 on Wisconsin will be no problem. I may be able to barrow MiniMo which would be cool. If not I would hope to tag along shotgun if someone would be willing. As far as any issue with the snow it should be covered unless there is a big blast.
Now to go shopping.

C'mon, MINIACS! Where's your holiday spirit? Think of all of those little kids that don't have a toy on Christmas! I'm happy to say that I've made my purchases and have requested that my coworkers donate toys....let's fill up six MINIs this year! Last year, we had so many MINIs participate!!!

And Scott, you're more than welcome to join us in Pepper!  But wear your hat, cause we're going topless!

Hey, hey, hey! OK, we're a little slower out of the starting gates than last year, but I count 7 MINIs to this point and hopefully we can round up a few more before it's all said and done. I'd love a huge turnout, but what we get is what we get and bringing toys for these kids is great, however many or few we are!

Scott, I'm sorry to hear MiniMo moved away with Maureen. It sounds like a good sign that maybe you could borrow Mini for this event, but if not, and if you don't want to crowd in the Pepper (with no snow tires) and all those presents, you're welcome to join me too! I've always been grateful for your / RFD's help with this event (all those two years!). Maybe we can strap a ladder and some lights on the MINI and have a MINI fire truck (or MINI fire car) do the lead this year. Maybe RFD wants to buy a MINI and paint it as a fire engine for use at the schools or something...

But I digress. I appreciate all of you who are on-board and if you find some more MINIacs, round 'em up! I have no doubt we'll have a great time!

HO HO HO! See you on the 18th!

LMAO! OMG you are killing me. Snow tires, snow shoes, topless and a fire red RFD MINI with a ladder on top. So funny. I will check today with the Captain of the house to lock in the truck for escort. As we know this is available if the truck will be in house and not on a call like last year.

Update: We are all set for the club to meet at Engine 12 Firehouse at 160 Wisconsin St. Still waiting for approval for the Firetruck as an escort but it should not be an issue. I will be contacting TV 8 to attempt to have a crew there again.

Now the the sad part. I can not be there to see you all. I am tied up for the day and can not get away. But I have informed the crew there at the firehouse and they should welcome you with open arms like always. If the Firetruck is not there then it's up to you all. I know that you are the best of friends and this will be another great event for the club. Merry Christmas to you all and be MINI save.

I am delighted for those who are / continue to plan on joining this annual soiree! I will tend to the details this week and post back here so everyone knows 'the Plan'. Scott, I am really sorry you won't be able to join us. Thank you, so much, for arranging for us to once again base out of the the fire station.

We got pretty buried in snow and we've been moving it; blowing it, shoveling it, and raking it since last weekend. Now, after a little rain tonight and tomorrow, they say it's going to start all over again...

Thanks all; see you next weekend!

Engine 12 as escort and TV 8 are set to go.
If you all need anything else let me know.

And I just had to include this pic I found on the web. Done by Monster Garage and is said to go through 4 foot drifts. I guess a MINI really can "drift".

Sorry some of you have had to make alternate plans; we'll miss you! Thanks Scott, for your assistance and willingness to be on standby for clearing the alley / lot. I will let Gary know you'll do so if need be.

Stay tuned for a few last-minute details--H appy Shopping Everyone!

I'm looking at the forecast for this week, and although I'm planning on having snow tires put on Pepper on Friday, if this weather keeps up, I might not be able to get her in. No worries, she may end up wearing her "bunny" suit this saturday and looking curiously like a VW Rabbit! I'm getting quite a few toys together for this event, so I'm looking forward to it.
