Stopped into Dunn Tire today to get their prices on Kumho tires for the spring. Being a highly rated sport tire and a great value I thought it would be a nice tire to replace the run flats on the car from last summer that push bad in corners.
Dunn told me that since the car had run flats on it they can not put non-run flats on the car. I even said how we are running Blizaks right now without any problems. I was also told that since they can't get anything in writing from MINI that the non runflat tires are going to be safe on the car, they can't do it, even if I brought they the tires to put on. Then he went on to say that the rims are different.
My question - Is all this really true or just a bunch of hogwash? I know many have gone to the non run flat tires.

it is total hogwash. Go to Craigs Autometrics or somewhere who has the machine to remove runflats. They can be dangerous to remove without proper equipment (plus bad for the rims) Getting rid of the runflats was one of the best things we did for handling and ride.
One nice thing is the run flats are off now. I was saving them for this spring at the Glen if we do the track masters. Need a good used tire to waste. :) I have heard some crud in my life but this was one of those moments when you are saying to yourself " you want me to believe this" when the manager is looking you dead in the eye while feeding you. You have meet me and I know I do not look like an dumb ***. easy on the comebacks. So what the heck. Is Dunn Tire on Ridge Road west at Mt Read that bad off that they have to feed a line to get you to purchase a most costly tire?
Again thanx.

To me it just sounds like Dunn Tire doesn't want your business. I like to get tires from tirerack.com and then take them to a garage and just ask them to put them on. Most places either don't have what I want in stock, or they try to get you to buy whatever it is they are pushing at the time.
When I replaced the run flats on one of the MINIs we had I purchased the new tires on line and ended up having Dunn (in Henrietta) do the switch so they certainly can do the job. As mentioned above there's absolutely no reason why the car can't use run flats. The original new MINIs were in fact designed to run on regular tires but the decision was made soon before production began to use run flats instead. The later model MINIs were designed to use runflats which is one of the reasons the ride isn't as harsh in those models.
I'll be replacing the run flats on our present BMW 135i with regular tires in the spring. If I buy from TireRack, I'll likely use Craig Audiometrics for the switch. While Dunn was able to do the job, and I was standing with the tire guy while he did the job, there was still a small amount of damage done to the rim as they had little experience working with run flat tires.
I don't have run-flats, but Craig Autometrics have done all my tire-swapping (along with inspections, oil changes & brake work) over the past 6 years, and I also recommend them. 10 Winthrop St 325-3337
They are downtown on Winthrop St, off East Ave, next door to the Little Theater. I still wish they were open when the movie theater was open, so you could drop off the car, see a movie, and pick up the car when it's done.
I got rid of my run flats as soon as I could... hated them. NO ONE even blinked an eye when I changed to regular summer tires.... SO far SO good and its been 3 years now on the summer tires....

One of the requirements when I bought by 03 was that the old tires came off and the new all weather tires went on....BOTH of my cars (02 and 03) have summer non-run-flats.
