Everyone knows red goes faster but did you know it also stops faster?  So last week-end Pat did the red G2 kit on the calipers.  The hardest part was getting the MINI up in the air.

On a less cheerful note we developed some dreadful discoloration on the bonnet stripes, at least the bits past the paint protection film.  Towne was completely responsive and replaced the stripes but ... we had to re-film.  The bits under the PPF looked so good we opted for the whole "hood" rather than just the lower third.  The real bummer was them finding a bitty chip near one of the nozzles.  Towne touched it up and now it's under the film.  So far I can't find it.

The really good news is that as soon as the new centercaps arrive we're done with the little tweaks.  At least that's the story today.

Congrats! Sounds like your MINI should be one spiffy little car now, ready for anything. It's tough getting to the point where we're so...ahh, what's the word...picky?...about our cars, isn't it? Glad you got the finishing touches squared away and also good to know Towne worked well with you.

I just did the duplicolor caliper kit. I have heard the g2 is better but I like the duplicolor so far. My bonnet stripes looked terrible about a week ago but I used some cleaner wax and they look like new again. How much did Towne charge for touch ups if you don't mind me asking? I have a few chips I would like to get filled.

If the chips aren't excessively deep you can repair them yourself.  I got a chip on the door of our car soon after getting it and used Dr. Colorchip to repair it.  Unless you get very close or know where to look the repair is pretty difficult to see.

The 'Dr. Colorchip' name is pretty cheesy but it's easy to apply and as mentioned does a good job, certainly better than the normal touch up paint or paint pens.   When ordering you need to send in the paint code off your car and they suppposedly prepare the paint for each individual order.  The match on our car is perfect.

G2 is seriously shiny and it was really quite easy to put on (sez the guy who watched).  Pat divided it in case we decided (which we did) to fiddle a bit more later.  They supply enough paint for three or four MINIs.  Or one MINI's calipers plus the rotor hats.

Regarding the chips: they didn't charge us.  Probably because 1) it was one and tiny and 2) Brian Kelly was there to replace the film they had to lift to replace the stripes.

Mark called me and said "We touched up a tiny chip, do you want Brian to go ahead with the film or do you want to come and look at it first?"  I said go ahead.

We got Pat's MINI partially detailed today.  Partially because it was exterior only (I mean it's only six weeks old) and because of delays in getting the film replaced on the bonnet that bit had to be left alone.  I wanted it clayed and waxed with the intention of putting down a nice base that I could just wash and Hydro.

So we thought the chili red was shiny when it was new at Towne.  Hah!  NOW it's shiny.  I picked the particular detailer because he was the first one that said he could clay it.  When we down to his place he had all the right stuff and said things like he could use the PC or hand buff.  He used Zaino and Black Wow, cleaned the shiny red calipers and even removed that little soot smudge on the exhaust tip.  The paint is as smooth as the windows now.

I have not heard the term 'clay'. Is that polishing compound? It does have a clayish consistency.
Who was the detailer that you went to?
I have always done my own polishing & waxing. But then again, I have never had a MINI before.

Clay is like modelling clay and is used to pull contaminants.  I went to Chris Wittmer in Hamburg.  He calls his place Pro Detail.  It's not his day job (he works out of his garage at home) but he has all the bits you need.

I expect to wash and "Hydro" our MINI myself.  I'll probably even wax it but I wanted to let someone else (with experience) do the infrastructure.

I'd strongly advise you to NOT read the Detailing 101 forum at NAM.  Really.  I'm not kidding.  You don't want to get caught in in the Zaino, Prima, Einszett, Menzerna, Griots, Meguiar's Pro etc. etc.  maelstrom.  Personally I draw the line at a two mitt/two bucket wash with a DirtGuard and a handful of Prima products (because they smell good?).

Regarding clay: What/How

Where to buy: Zaino Griot's Meguiar's Autopia and of course Pep Boys.
