Getting to know everyone

Hello everyone.  I'm new to the MINI club, but won't have my Cooper S till November.  Are there any RIT students or alumni in the ranks?  I'm going back to school for a degree in Civil Engineering Tech.  I have 3 classes left and I'm on co-op now w/ the NYSDOT.  In October I will be taking the FE exam.  Is there anyone who has taken this exam?  Any advise on how to study for it would be greatly appreciated.

SU Alum with Mechanical Engineering degree, now working at Bobcat in the Czech Republic as a Senior Design Engineer designing Attachments for loaders, excavators and telehandlers.
Took the NYS FE 3 years ago...My advice is to go through the exam and do only the easiest quickest questions first. then go through it again and do the slightly harder ones... I'd say the biggest challenge is getting past the mental aspect of sitting through 4 hours of Engineering problems with a brief break and then sitting through another 4 hours.....You kinda go a little crazy, so doing as many questions as possible before the insanity and mental exahustion sets in is key....By the way the major reason people left the exam early (and MANY of my friends did) was because they couldn't take it anymore.
Btw I choose the Mechanical section in the afternoon (vs the general) and passed...
Good Luck and let me know if you have any more questions about gettting your PE

Welcome, CaliBean. I went to school for accounting at Ithaca College, but in order to become a CPA, I had to take a 16 hour exam (over 2 days). My general advice is invest the time in studying, and have a regimen so that you know every day what study time is. Allow a certain amount of time for life stuff (cleaning, grocery shopping, etc.). Very few (less than 2%) of people sitting for the CPA exam pass on the first time around, and I was one of the few that did. It was a great feeling getting it over with.

My husband is an RIT grad in Mechanical Engineering (he graduated in 2000). He didn't sit for the FE exam, and hasn't found that he needed it for his line of work yet. Good luck with the exam (take the time that you're waiting for your MINI to study, cause you won't want to after you get it!).

Although Architects and Engineers both need proffesional experience to get their licences, I never understood how Engineers need only two 8 hour exams to get licenced  while architects (who pretty much only have to make buildings look pretty since the engineers make sure it stands) have to take something like 8 2-4 hour exams

I hear you Venno,  Engineers also have so much more liability.  CYA, and make sure all aspects of a project are safe, implement redundency and stand the test of time...  BTW  I'm such an idiot,  A freind said I had till September to sign up for the FE, So procrastination set in and now I waited to long.  Now I must take it in April 2009.  I guess I'll have more time to study.  I know it will be tough.  I had a few friends that took it last april.  2 failed and one walked out...  I think if I prepare I'll be fine.

Hey Cali, on anther thread I saw a post of yours  that you completed the FE, and i was wondering how it went for you, but didn't want to go off topic on that thread, so I ask here...So how was it? you actually complete the 8 hours? you do all the questions? was my advice helpful?

Oh man it was tough.  The morning session wasn't too bad.  There were some questions that kind of stumped me.  The afternoon session was a bear.  About halfway though my brain wanted to shut down.  I stuck with it but had to guess on some.  I got a review book to study from and it helped quite a bit.  The biggest help was learning where everything was in the reference guide and that saved alot of time in the exam.  When I left the test I know I didn't bomb it but I did have to guess on some questions and wasn't confident on others.  It just stinks that I'll have to wait 12 weeks to find out.
