BEWARE of using your credit card over the internet

I used to use my credit card over the internet all the time.  I will not any longer.  Thank GOD my credit card company did not authorize a charge, apparently someone tried to make a credit card purchase for over $2,700 on my card but my credit card company would not authorize it.  They contacted me by email and I called them and they are re-issuing me new cards and they are starting an investigation.

i just got my identity stolen 2 months ago over the internet, im 21 and thought i would be screwed. but i caught it myself in 10 hours after the incident and all my money was taken out of my checking account. I only got half of that money back and im waiting for the paper work to go through where i can get my other chunk of my money. I got all new cards and if i buy anything or anyone else does i get a call through my cellphone and i have to authorize it. I think they should do that all the time. The FBI is looking into it at the moment cause i beleive i know where it was through. Prolly will not know for a long time. Your a lucky person

My husband asked me lastnight why equifax monitoring didn't warn us about this charge being made but I think it was because the credit company did not authorize it and it never went through. When they saw that someone was trying to make that large of a purchase they instantly put a stop on my card and contacted me. I will be very cautious from now on and I will no longer charge things over the internet.

If you want to stop your swearing and since you obviously care about animals think of a puppy being kicked each time you "potty mouth"

MJB, wow--this on top of your mom being in the hosiptal? That's a lot to deal with at once. You have my sincere sympathy.

I had a similar episode a few years ago. My card was denied at a gas station and when I contacted my issuer, they told me they had numerous charges in rapid succession from across the country. Apparently they had tried to call me but couldn't reach me so they just put a hold on the card until we talked. I never did find out if it was from an internet transaction, but I got all kinds of phone & email credit / credit card-related offers shortly thereafter that made me think it did originate from an online credit card purchase.

By now I'm sure you're well aware of recommended procedures to follow-up on identity theft that each of the three major credit reporting companies have posted on their websites. In regard to your post above, I believe the credit reporting companies track inquiries about your credit, and activity related to your credit--such as opening new accounts, etc. I don't think they track ongoing usage of your credit card (other than reporting balances carried).

However, it sounds like you may have purchased the 'monitoring' option--that I'm not familiar with at all.

In any event, I hope your situation gets resolved with little real damage.

Brian, your situation sounds bad (but hopefully getting better). After I had a similar experience (but my account wasn't emptied!), I really started wondering why, with the ever-increasing incidence of identity theft, there weren't better safeguards in place like the calls to check that you mention. Did you put a 'freeze' on your credit, or does your card issuer offer that service? It seems like a reasonable tradeoff given the age we're living in. Hope your situaiton works out OK for you!

everything with me is ok. My whole identity was shut down for a whole week. If anyone did anything with my name the police would be immediately contacted and that person would be caught. But unfortunately my accounts were all emptied and they must have known it. so we caught no one yet. All new cards and everything's back on track. Im just waiting on the rest of my money but that will take a while. I guess it would be a hassle to get a phone call to most people. But id rather my identity be safe and get a phone call every time then be screwed over. MY credits still really nice. 725 and rising hehe
