Mirror Caps

Hi - I hope I'm posting in the right place for this, but anyway....
I have chrome mirror caps on my Mini that came with the exterior chrome package when I got the car. Now I have bought some really cool checkered ones that I want to put on to change the look of the car but I've got a problem....I don't know how to take the chrome ones off, or rather, if I should even bother taking them off.

Anyone have a suggestion? The chrome ones are really suck on there. Is this something I should call Towne about???

Good news - the mirror caps can be removed and replaced. They are held on by 5 clips on the cap itself that can be broken failry easily if not careful during the removal process. Luckily there is a step-by-step guide in the DYI section on MINI2.com.

Not an especailly difficult job, just need to be careful.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip! -- but I think these are different from the regular white or black stock ones they show in the DYI. The new checkered ones I got adhere to the mirror caps with an adhesive tape that is on them and don't have the clip part (they are just a shell). And I think the chrome ones are glued on.....

If the chrome caps are a factory install I'd think they would be installed as the other OEM caps, i.e. clipped into place.  Since the replacement caps you have tape into place why can't you just stick them over the existing caps?

Since those stick onto place I don't think you'd want to remove the cap as that would leave nothing behind the mirror for your new caps to adhere to:

If the chrome caps are really glued into place you might have a difficult time removing them.  I'd suggest contacting Towne for info on how your existing caps are attached to the car.

Yeah, I think I'll call Towne tomorrow to see exactly how they are installed on the car before I go popping things off and on!

Thanks for all the help! biggrin.gif

Liz,

It does not sound as if those are OEM checkered mirror caps. The only mirror cap that is adhered on is the interior rear view mirror cap. The side view mirror caps we sell are the whole mirror cap, not a slip for lack of better words. Give me a call Mon-Fri 7:30-5pm  (505-2100 x 435) or feel free to respond via this site, often times the best way to get a hold of me with a timely response would be via e-mail at miniservice@towneauto.com
