Finger Lakes Mini Run Sunday, 8/19/07

If it's the same as last year, the track lap fee is $25.

Our usual plan for food at the picnic is that we'll provide sandwich makings & drinks (will have vegetarian options too), and if everyone can bring a dish or something to pass- i.e. salad, chips or dessert, there will be more than enough food for us all!

I'll print directions to the picnic site (Chad & Nichole's house) to bring to the track, though we will try to stay together & drive in a group. (Always a nice way to surprise the neighbors!)

I'm in, too... never done a rally before (only been an owner for two months!).

Bagpiper... you serious about bringing the pipes??? That is SO cool... that might be the ticket to get my hubby to join me!

Oh, also... how fast are the laps generally?

There is a pace car that will go 55 mph, and that is the top speed allowed by the racetrack. Another thing to note is that they don't allow passing, and will ask anyone who passes to leave the track. (One of the less pleasant memories of last year!) In the 10-12 trips I've had on the track doing paced laps, I''ve enjoyed them all- there are places on this track on the turns where it's very difficult to do 55 mph even in a Mini, and people have been good about keeping well behind the person in front as we're going around. Watkins Glen International has been very enthusiastic about having groups of Minis come down.

It's getting to be time to plan the lunchables- if people know at this point they will be coming, or even might be able to make it, please post here & I'll make sure we've got enough food for all. We'll have sandwich stuff and drinks, and if everyone could bring a dish to pass (salad, veggies or fruit, chips or dessert) that will round it out nicely. For anyone meeting at the Geneva Wegmans, that will be a good opportunity to pick something up if you'd like.

I'll have directions to Nichole & Chad's house at the track (and directions back to the Thruway). If anyone wants the address ahead of time, send me a PM or email.

Sorry I'll miss it. It was a great time 2 years ago. We will be out of town that weekend. Will there be a fall run to the Glen?

It'll be sandwiches rather than BBQ, so we can eat faster (lunch tends to be late since the laps are not until 12 or after). Do they make deli Tofurkey? I'll definitely have hummus, and cheese for the non-vegans. Probably also PB&J.

Sypher, sorry you'll miss it, but I know it's a busy time of year for people. I don't have any definite plans for a fall Glen run, but would have to check their schedule. The track closed early last year on September 30, so we'd have to see how late they are running track laps. We always try to get some Minis down on Opening Day (last Sunday in April the past 2 years).

any idea how much stuff I will need to put in the cooler? One I have holds about 6 cans of soda, the other one holds about 60 cans (full size cooler)

I would prefer to bring the smaller one. I dont really want a large cooler banging around on the track =)

the deli tofurkey will be in the vegan section of Wegmans, we might just pick some up since some weggies have and some have not.

I'm thinking it might be slightly less possible in Geneva, but hey, you never know!

I'll have at least 2 coolers, if not 3, if you need space for something. I have an electric cooler too, but the compressor was making a lot of noise when I had it running for 2 days at MOT, so I'll be testing that out also before I rely on it.

if its a DC cooler than most likely it is thermoelectric. This means it just has a metal plate and a fan on top of it to move air. If its just the fan that should be easy to replace. So dont throw it away!

Hello Everyone,

My husband (Brian) and I (Holly) will be joining. We're planning on bringing Brian's "Almost Famous" Pizza bread (both a vegetarian and carnivore version), and my snickerdoodle cookies. This will be our first MINI event, and we're both really excited. I'm also glad that there seems to be other vegetableatarians. I've been reading the postings from everyone, and I can't wait to meet you all in person. I don't think that this event will help Brian with his MINI envy, though!

Yellow - I was thinking about bringing hummus & veggies and still can since you're picking up the sandwich stuff for everyone...

I'm not sure it's possible to have too much hummus! OK, maybe in pounds. Hummus & veggies sounds good too! If you want to bring the hummus, I'll get the PB&J.

alright then i guess I'll make some bread (Protein bread) and I'll bring some Chevere (it tastes and feels like cream cheese only its goat cheese so its 1/3 the calories, less fat, more flavor and i went to the cheesery where they make the stuff in preperation for the cheese run...the family that makes it is really cool) and I'll pick up som tofurky ham slices

Are any T-Burgers (you know who you are) or Ithaca area Mini drivers planning to attend the Watkins rally? If so PM me and maybe we can meet in T-Burg Sunday Morning and drive over to Watkins together.

Speaking of ice cream, which is a personal weakness of mine, there's this really great place called the Cayuga Lake Creamery on Route 89 in Interlaken. It's on the way home for the Rochester area crew (sort of). I have attempted to paste in their link below:

Seneca Farms is another possible stop on the way home to Rochester, on 54A in Penn Yan (and then onto the twisty roads up 364 to 5&20)

what?!? i can't be the only person who was wondering what it is...

Back to the actual topic of the thread - I vote for the twisty roads on the way back over Mr. Twistees (even though the vanilla/sherbert twist is delicious awesomeness).

There's ice cream in them thar hills! biggrin.gif

If anyone has 2 way radios, bring 'em along. They are very helpful for keeping the Minis together, especially through downtown Watkins Glen. And for banter. (And the Spam Song)

We'll be on channel 7, subchannel 21. If anyone has extra radios, bring them too. (I'll have 3 extra)

If anyone doesn't have my cell phone # & would like it for last minute directions or updates, send me a PM.

No worries....Protien Bread is a bread that I make....It has soy flour (along with whole weat and bread flour) in it which makes it rich in protein...its a bit denser, and a little more crumblier than normal bread but its healthy and good
