MINIs On Top 6/17/06 Mt Washington NH

If anyone is interested in coming along to one of my favorite Mini events in the Northeast, MINIs On Top is known for non-stop fun, with the goal of driving your Mini to the top of the Mount Washington Autoroad, with 199 other Minis. Or, if you decide to forgo the drive, just hanging out for a picnic and some drives through the White Mountains with a nice group of Mini owners.

Registration is required, and limited to 200 Minis for the Autoroad drive. Registration ends May 1st.

Here is info from Ian Cull, GBMINI from MINI2:
"MINIsOnTop (June 17th, 2006)

With some trepidation, GBMINI has taken the reins from Cape Cod MINI and will be trying to rally the "yellow shirt" volunteers to put together another event next summer offering as much fun as previous years ...
(GBMINI weblog entries from MOT2003, MOT2004 and MOT2005 - also the night before and the morning after)
We must hope for better weather next year - but almost everyone at MOT2005 agreed that the rain did not much dampen the day.

The annual event has grown from 70 MINIs in 2003 to almost 220 in 2005 (there is a 200 car limit at the top of Mount Washington - early registration is advised if you wish to drive up!)

Following in CCMs footsteps, MINIsOnTop 2006 will offer:

* A Friday night gathering at the Town & Country Inn in Gorham, NH (the preferred lodging for the event)
* Saturday morning gathering at Loon Mountain parking lot (subject to confirmation) - other events under discussion including possible "skill driving" similar to a recent MINI of Peabody event
* Parade drive routes including the traditional Kancamagus Highway and (probably) a route up through Franconia Notch
* The "main meeting" at the start of the Mount Washington Auto Road with photos, food, fun and freebies
* Driving up the auto road in the (faint) hope of catching great weather and an amazing sunset - like we saw in 2003

Other activities will include caravan drives from various locations including the Yankee Candle group

See the new Tshirt design for MOT2006 (here), or the classic design is still available (here)

Many more announcements will follow in the months to come - be sure to sign up for MINIsOnTop email announcements if you have not already done so.

Registration clarifications:
#1 there is no such thing as pre-registration.
#2 you can get your email on a message list (http://www.minisontop.com/subscribe.htm) that gives you notice of MOT announcements. You can also get automatic updates from MINI2 whenever a message is posted on this thread.
#3 Some time in the next month, when we have all the pricing/etc info ready, we will announce and release the MOT2006 registration form - you must download, print, fill-in and mail this form, along with payment.
#4 You will receive email confirmation when the registration form / payment is received - only then are you registered.
#5 There is a 200 car limit at the top of Mount Washington - more cars can come to all the other events, but only the first 200 registrants that pay for the trip up the auto road will be able to do so.
#6 Registration will only be open for a few weeks - this gives the organizers time to get Tshirts, etc ordered, made, packed and shipped out before the event.
#7 If you miss registration, you won't be able to attend. If you are late registering, you might not get to the top of Mount Washington - although the rest of activities are still great fun."

February 16th
Registration is now open; to register you should download the PDF file, print it, fill it in completely, and mail it along with the payment check to MINIsOnTop, PO Box 617, Essex MA 01929.
Please note that the registration must be mailed by May 1, 2006 and that FedEx / UPS deliveries cannot be made to a PO Box address. Late registrations will not be accepted!"

We'll be leaving the Rochester area on Thursday around noon, from the Oven Door Bakery in Bushnell's Basin, to drive to South Deerfield MA to stay overnight, and meet up with the caravan of Minis from the Yankee Candle store, to the Town & Country Inn in Gorham, NH.

Folks coming from the west (Chicago, Indiana & Wyoming) will be meeting up with us for the drive east. A friend of mine from California is flying in also, so we will have quite a crowd to hear north.

Last year we had a good sized crowd from WNY, the Lapps from Painted Post, who have been to every MOT yet, The Big Yin and his 2 Mini family, Bob & Bonnie, and Pamlico & Mrs Pamlico. It was fun when Pamlico & the Big Yin met at the base of Mt Washington & realized they lived a few miles from each other. I met the Lapps for the first time in Bar Harbor, ME at MOT 2004.

Details to follow, but if you'd like to go, or are thinking about it, sign up now!

There will be folks driving through WNY on the way to Minis On Top, and we'll be meeting up with them Thursday around noon. There's a small crowd coming from the IL, IN, OH area who will be stopping off in Wellsville Wed night, and then we will join up and head to western Mass to meet a 40 Mini caravan Friday AM for the drive to NH. Then driving around the White Mountains area Saturday, with a dinner & drive up the Mt Washington Autoroad around 7 pm. Watch this space:

It was a great weekend! We had perfect weather, though it was a bit foggy at the Mt Washington summit (not much of a surprise!) We had a few Western NYers, Dan Ives & Mrs Ives from Towne, the Lapps from Corning, The Big Yin & family for Roch. & me, of course. There were over 200 Minis there, and about 400-500 people.

My team came in 2nd in the Trivia Contest Friday night, which was a hoot. Saturday we met at Loon Mountain, and there were several group drives, which was a nice way to see more of the White Mountain region. Then we all reconvened for a nice dinner at the base of the Mount Washington Autoroad, and for the raffle prizes. (Will have to find the pic of Ivan riding the pedal car that Towne donated on part of the Autoroad...)

I've been a bit busy with the house hunting & still don't have pictures uploaded yet. Someday soon, I hope!

Yay! I'm planning on going again, and anyone who is thinking of it may want to watch the MOT website for news:
http://minisontop.com/category/mot2007/

Also, it is worth making hotel reservations early, and the Town & Country Motor Lodge is the hot spot to be:
http://www.townandcountryinn.com/

There is a limit on the number of cars that can drive up Mt Washington, so check early if you are interested!

Just made reservations at the T&C for this years MOT. Arrive on Friday, June 15 / depart on Sunday the 17th./

It looks like the Yankee Candle caravan will be happening again this year so hopefully we can arrange for a Western NY sub-caravan to get to that. Way early to finalize plans, but we could try to repeat last year's attempt. Meet at the Oven Door Bakery in Bushnell's Basin (owner drives a MINI) on Thursday, June 14 and then proceed to the YC in western Mass. The YC caravan departs for MOT on Friday, June 15.

Sweet, I know at least 2 of us from Penfield will be going! As for jr (the third member of the fam), he might be spending the weekend with Grandma. How far is the drive from here? I was worried it might be too long for him. He made the trip last year, though, from metro NY, and the year before that inside my belly!

Great.

The drive to the Yankee Candle is about 5 1/2 hrs. If we were to decide to take a more scenic route, which involves getting off the Thruway and then taking Rt. 2 into Mass to the YC, I'd add on another 45 minutes or so, perhaps an hour.

Does "2 of us from Penfield" mean 2 people or 2 MINIs?

Just Mr and Mrs Tscheez. (Perhaps Baby Tscheez)
We JUST reserved our room!
We're on the second floor this year. Last year we were up all night with the baby everytime someone honked a novelty horn or revved their JC works engine...
I tried to get a suite on top of the hill, but they were an extra $50/ night!
BTW, what is the TOTAL driving time we're looking at?

I asked for a quiet room but who knows. We couldn't make it last year but the year before stayed at the Royalty Inn which is about a mile or so down the road and found that to be a nice (and quiet) place.

The drive from South Deerfield MA (where the Yankee Candle) is located to Gorham, NH is shown as roughly 4 hrs on Google maps, but a lot of that is highway driving. In the past the caravan has gone a different route, avoiding highways as much as possible Also, there are a couple of stops for gas, restrooms, meet up with another caravan that forms in New Hampshire, etc. I can't recall for sure, but plan on at least 5 hrs from the Yankee Candle, perhaps more. Yellowmini probably has a better time sense that I so perhaps she'll update with accurate info.

I can't remember either! :D I think it was about 5 hours. We did stop a lot, and met up with the Boston area folks at 'Area 51', and I'm sure it's possible to do it in slightly less time. For me driving back from Lincoln to Rochester took about 9 hours. I usually took 2 west to 91 south, to 90.

RE: MINIs On Top 6/15-16/07 Mt Washington NH

Greetings to all those interested in attending the 2007 MINIs On Top. I learned about the 2006 event last year too late to get signed up for anything. So, we're starting early this year.

We just booked our room at the T&C for the 6/15-16 weekend. Our thought is to drive to Brattleboro, VT on the 14th (stay there overnight / sightseeing in the morning). On the 15th, we plan to drive over to YC and meet up with the MINIs there, shop and drive up to Shelburne in one of the groups.

Ha, a Moose Hunt! We'll be there. With Tuckerman Ravine, White Mountain National Forest, trails, skill driving, sightseeing drives, etc., there is lots to do during the day on Saturday. Good thing, we will have time to think of what we want to do.

Speaking of Saturday, I see that there is a road race (i.e., runners) up to the Mt. Washington summit on the 16th. I suspect the road may be closed for part of that day. So, if you are not going up with the MOT 200, it may be challenging to drive to the summit on Saturday.

Yellowmini, What do you think of opening a new thread for the 2007 MINIs On Top?

In fact the road is closed to the public that day to allow for the race. The MOT gathering actually takes place in the tent used by the runners, but it's not available until they are finished, thus the reason for the relatively late start to the MOT dining and prize distribution. In 2005 there was a good deal of rain and all those attending MOT had to slog around in the mud for some time while the running organization completed their activities and the MOT caterers got things prepared.

The road usually closes around 6PM but MOT (and other groups) purchase the right to a group drive up.

Also, that time in June is also the end of motorcycle week in NH and there will be a good number of motorcyclists in the vicinity.

I just came across this board. Looks like a lot of fun. Are there many western new yorkers here who go to it?
