duplicate keys

Hi everybody,

New to the forum - bought my MINI 2005 convertible used over the summer and I LOVE IT! It is now in storage for the winter, enjoying a long nap.

Anyways, when I bought it, it only came with one key. That's fine, I am the only one who drives it, but I am thinking ahead, in case of an emergency.

Everything I have read online is confusing, and sounds expensive. I just want a key to start the car and manually unlock the door. I do not want any "reprogramming" as is often mentioned in posts.

Anyone have any experience with this?

THANKS! -c

PS: if anyone wants any info on convertible roof replacement, I have first hand experience. The roof was slashed ONE WEEK after I bought it!

I'm not too certain about the previous generation MINI about keys. I imagine it is very similar though in that each key has electronics that need to be programmed into the car. From everyone I've heard is that it is expensive. I'm sure you can get a key to just unlock the door for cheap.

I have a first gen mini, and it came with a key with electronics in it, and a spare one with nothing inside the shell. They're still both laser cut, but I'm sure If you go down to Towne mini they can help!

Hey all!

An update on duplicate keys...

Now that is almost time to spring MINI from winter hibernation, I thought it was probably good to seriously investigate this duplicate key situation. As much as Towne has been helpful in my slashed roof, I did not want the hassle of driving back and forth (or sending everything, including a copy of my license and title via registered  mail!) to Buffalo.

So, I talked to Tom, I think the parts supply guy, at the newish Dorshell MINI, and he could not have been more courteous. I did have to do my research and say that I only wanted a key to open the door and turn on the car - not one that would do the remotes of the door and the roof, which require LOTS more money and car reprogramming. All I had to give is the VIN number and I when I pick it up, after showing the title, I will get a simple key.

Approx. $53 vrs. $350 plus.

Kuddos to Tom and the MINI here for such integrity!

I am truly looking forward to May 1 when the convertible once again hits the road. Look for the grey MINI with the happy driver in downtown Rochester.

See you all this summer...

-c
