I have torn the back seat apart looking for the mechanical release.. but cant seem to find it.....OH BOY disbelief

Hmm, trying to remember if this was on Minis (i.e. 2002) or if it was only added later, 2003? Mine is a ring on a pull chain under the seat cushion, about in the middle of the seat.

I have an 02 and my manual says there's one there. I haven't actually seen it but it's supposed to be there. I may venture out to the garage and check tomorrow.

If, in my dotage, i remember correctly, the earliest MINIs didn't have the cable release.

Well I pulled up the rear seat and no release latch. Supposedly it became standard on 2003s.

That's what I found... no release.. so how does one open a rear boot if there is no mechanical release..... hmmmmm hmm

Can opener? I always have trouble remembering the changes from 2002-2003- but I know I have no power outlet in the boot, either.

I don't know if you can reach the mechanism from inside the boot with any kind of thin metal implement (ok, screwdriver etc) that might release the catch from the inside?

We have a 2002 Mini Cooper but it is in storage and not accessible. We have had it since 2002 and not had the problem or had occasion to look under the rear seat.

I have both the Bentley Mini Cooper 2002, 2003, 2004 Service Manual and the Haynes Mini July 2001 to 2005 Owners Workshop Manual

The Bentley Manual shows a picture, page 515-7, of the Rear Hatch Lock Emergency Release with the verbage "In case of electrical failure, there is an emergency rear hatch lock release under the rear seat". The Manual does not distinquish different releases or ways to release the hatch for different years.

I have not found anything in the Haynes Manual pertaining to a hatch lock release.

Talked to mini this morining... just happens that the EARLY models do not have the release.. so it's off to Buffalo and I'll let them figure it out.... confuse

OK soo here's a secret.... THE LATCH will FIX ITS SELF if you threaten it with a broken HOCKEY STICK... furious

I took my broken hockey stick and said... see this stick... you are going to get a piece of this if you continue to NOT WORK... and guess what.... confuse IT NOW WORKS.JUST FINE.. I have the magic stick... biggrin
