Finger Lakes Run 2010 Sunday August 15th

It's that time of year again, and for anyone who can't make it to Minis Take The States, I figured we can still have fun any way.

I'm planning to follow the previous year's agenda, meet at the Geneva Wegmans around 9 AM, take the scenic route to Watkins Glen, do paced laps on the track at 12 noon, and then drive around the village Grand Prix Old Course (railroad tracks!)

I was able to get a picnic shelter at Watkins Glen State Park, so we'll do the picnic lunch post-drive in the West Lodge in Watkins Glen State Park.  I'll have sandwich makings & drinks (soda & water), if anyone who would like to can bring something to share (salads or veggies, chips or essert).  Wegmans is always a good spot to pick something up that day!

For folks coming from the south, we'll meet up the WGI Ticket Office at 11 AM (3rd entrance off County Rd 16., technically entrance 4A)

2 way radios will be helpful if you have them for the drive to Watkins Glen & the Old Course trip, on channel 7, sub channel 21.

Paced laps @ Watkins Glen International are $25 per car.  Watkins Glen State Park entrance fee is $8 per car.

OH NO!!! I have a horse show that day!!! I'm so devastated...I missed the spring one, and now the late summer one. I think I'm going to cry.

Aww, that's too bad. Besides, I'd really like to see Hannah going over the railroad tracks!

It would be entertaining trying to convince Hanna to jump over the tracks. I'm sure she would somehow convince herself that they would jump out at her and gobble her right up.

Holly, don't horses and Hannah take Sundays off? I was thinking of joining in for this event (I can just imagine the look of glee on your face when you go over the tracks Cathleen), but we had also talked about taking our field glasses to the horse show and keeping a close eye on you Holly. THEN Jill told me she's going to be busy both days that weekend and it's my job to take care of Carmen. Which do you think she'd like better--racing around the track or watching all the tack at the horse show?

Wow, Kim, that's a tough choice indeed! On one hand, I don't recall that Jill cared too much for the track, so you could take Carmie guilt free and enjoy the day. On the other hand, I bet Carmie would really love getting attention from all of the people that will be at the show. I'm not sure that she loved horses so much, but she might get over it. But then Jill would miss it. I have another show in September, so you probably should go to Watkins Glen with the crew and then show me pics later!

PS...there's a restaurant that we drove by today (in Canandaigua) called "Carmen's", and not too far away, there's a restaurant called "Peppers". Co-wink-ee-dink?

I was thinking I COULD go guilt-free to the Glen, Holly, but realistically, I don't think Carmen would have a much better time than Jill did, especially if it was hot. I think I'm going to have to play this by ear--if by chance it's a nice cool day, I think Carmen might enjoy the horse show but if it's too hot, that's probably a no-go. Total MINI event: MINImal planning!

I'm not familiar with Carmen's in Canandaigua, but I do know of Peppers. Might be a good place for a MINI soiree sometime!

I'm working on a plan to head to Watkins Glen on Thurs 8/5, to meet another Mini at 6 pm who's visiting from Long Island (ALbiecrazy on NAM & MINIUSA). Probably will be a quick lap of the Old Course and maybe dinner, if anyone wants to go for a mid week, relatively spur of the moment drive. This will be my trial run of the route (so I can remember where Bellona Station Rd is...)

Current plan is to meet at the Walmart there at 6 pm
515 East 4th Street, Watkins Glen

Bummer--8/5 will not work for me Cathleen! Normally, I love a spontaneous MINI adventure, but I've already got things on my calendar for that day / time. Have a great time though!

This event on Sunday the 15th, sounds interesting. I might be able to attend this.

Since I am new to this, would there be any costs or requirements to do the laps at the Glenn?

Still sounds like a lot of fun just for the ride down and to see what it's all about.

I think the paced laps at Watkins Glen International are $25 for 3 laps (sorry, forgot to post that!)

You'll kick yourself if you don't go on the track. Lots o' fun.
Just changed my avatar to a photo from when we were on the track last year.

Very Cool. Looks like I can make this run. My schedule looks open for Sunday, Aug 15. Can't wait. The big question is can I get down to Wegmans in Geneva, on time.
Lol. biggrin

Do you usually have a good turn out to these events?

I talked to a friend who ran his porsche 944, on the track. He was telling me that he had to take some classes and had to ride with an instructor. He said he was able to run it full throttle. I thought maybe I had to take a driving class before going even though it was a paced lap.

I'm really looking forward to this event. Sounds like the whole day is alot of fun!

There are advanced driving schools held there. The BMW club holds one or two a year. It is a little pricy $400+, but it is an all day, or maybe a weekend school. You do get good instruction, & a lot of time on the track, at full speed. No paced laps @ that school. lol
Sounds like your friend did something in between these two types of track time.
There is a company in Watkins Glen that offers 3 paced laps @ Noon every week day & some weekends. (when there is no racing) Anybody can bring their own vehicle on the track. This is what we will be doing on the 15th. This is also what the track offers to the public opening day & I think last day of the season. The turn out for the opening day is HUUUGE. Last year we had about 33 MINI's show up, plus of coarse lots of other clubs & individuals. Couldn't make it this year, but they changed things a little. Last year it was a one day event. This year they had club day on Sat. & general public on Sun.
I have never been to this daily @ noon track time. Don't know what kind of turn out there will be.
I am going to try to make this.

I just called Watkins Glen State Park & was able to get a shelter (West Lodge) so I think we'll do the usual post drive lunch. The added cost to this is that it's $8 for the park entrance fee, but it is a beautiful park, with a gorge trail, and well worth the cost. (I like to support the state parks with this run, and lunch in one of the parks has been a common feature.)

I'll bring drinks and coldcuts and sandwich makings, and if you can, bring a dish to pass (salads, chips or dessert), and the Geneva Wegmans stop is always a good place to pick up something. (We've never run out of food!)

I guess cloning isn't advanced enough yet to arrange by next week?  I still think Hannah would rather come to Watkins Glen, but I could be wrong... biggrin  I've seen school buses on the racetrack, but not a horse trailer, yet!

Well, I've recently found out that Hanna is a pro at barrel racing, so maybe I could just gallop her around the track with the MINIs!

Count me in as a maybe. I need to get the power steering pump replaced first.

Power steering would really come in handy for the track, and particularly the village Grand Prix course. My daughter pointed out that I pocket-dialed her several times when I was driving in Watkins Glen on Thursday night, probably when making that turn over the stone bridge!

I'll be there as long as my dad and sister go. In Syracuse right now with the Neon (booo), but I'll meet up at Wegmans and swap it for my MINI :D

Yes, Dad & Sister will be there. We will bring a dish to pass. We have lots of Cucumbers in our garden. Will probably bring a cucumber & tomato salad.

I just found out today that we will need to stop at 'The Shop' on Franklin St to buy tickets, rather than paying at the gate as we did before. I'm going to plan to meet at the parking lot at the Shop at 10:30 (for anyone coming up from the south) rather than the Ticket office, but we wlll head up to the Ticket office after that, hopefully by 11:15.

For the north/east/westerners, we'll still meet at the Geneva Wegmans.

We won't have time at the Shop to do a lot of browsing, but I think they are open until 5 pm so if you're interested you can stop at the end of the day.

Add me to the list of attendees.

Is there anything I should be bringing along?

Well, in previous years my rule was that if you were travelling more than 100 miles, you don't need to bring anything, but if you want to bring something, the other rule is "When in doubt bring dessert!"

I'm hoping that 'scattered thunderstorms' means that it won't rain while we're on the track! I guess that's why I always like having the picnic shelter!

See you all tomorrow!
