I just got my set of 17" Enkie J10s. I picked them up used and two of them have a bit of curb rash, but a local body shop said they can fix them for $30-40 per wheel so at some point I will get that done. They came with a set of used Hankook ventus r-s2. One is completely done at 1/32 the others are at 3/32, 4/32. and 5/32. So if anyone needs a couple of summer tires we can work out a cheap price for the ones that are usable. New they start with 8/32 I guess.
So to replace the tires I needed something cheap. Enter Nexen n3000 $59 a piece. I know you get what you pay for, but this is what I am gettin' then. This is the place I found them that cheap http://www.tiredeals4less.com/index.cfm
I read a lot of good reviews for this tire, and supposedly Michelin is associated and a lot of the technology is the same. We will see at that price I can't be too disappointed.
So now I just have to decide when it is safe to put the summers on...

I also think I might do a little paint job with the j10s at some point. The back is what they look like now, and I am thinking about doing the quick photoshoped red thing. Tell me what you like, if you don't know I have a cr/w cooper.

Hey Mitch! Congratulations! Thanks for rushing winter along. If you could actually get it done tonight, I'd be grateful! I'm beginning to think Holly was right that we do live in Siberia. We were gone overnight last night--forecast was for 1-3" of snow today. Outside of Olean today the snow started picking up. When we got off I-86 near Kennedy, it started to get real exciting. The drifting on the ridge was impressive--about 6-8" covered the road for 1/4 - 1/2 mile. When I got to our ~350 ft. (uphill) driveway , we had drifting of close to a foot on much of it. Much as I LOVE tedscar, I was glad we had the Subie; it cruised right up it!
Moral of the story; don't put those spankin' new summer tires on too soon; I don't think we're quite done with winter yet .
As for those new wheels of yours, I actually think the red paint kind of sets them off . It's always hard for me to visualize wheels mounted, but I think the red version would look pretty cool on your MINI. That's my vote. Maybe you can Photoshop 'em onto your MINI and get a better idea of how they'll look .
I would love to photoshop them on my MINI, but I don't think my skills would take me that far. I can however put the wheels on then snap a shot and do it up then.
Last time I had summer tires I didn't put them on until the end of March and it snowed 1 1/2 the next weekend. Similar stories have happened with me several times, so it will snow after I put them on even if I do it in May.
With the Blizzaks I don't want to be driving them on these 40 degree days that happen between the snow storm because I want them to last. I have heard anything over 40 and they start wearing real fast.
So the summers will probably go on soon, and if/when we get more snow (like today) we will just take my wife's subaru.
Ya I sure want to drop it. But on the upside, these are the worn out tires with like no tread and are 215/40r17. The new tires come tomorrow with full tread and in size 215/45r17. So that should close the gap a bit. At least be a little less than the stock gap.
I am trying to work on finding a set of springs. Problem is I drive this year around so I worry a bit about the hight in the winter, but I can probably deal with it.
I would agree with Kim that the red would look out standing,you know before you spend the money and paint them go to your local hardware store and pickup some red duct tape /masking tape/ red tape. Now take your rim and put the tape inside the rim where the paint would be then slide the tire back on the car and stand back and look at it to see what you think. If you dont like it pull the tape off and you saved a little money. Just an idea. good luck . seeya CJ ps red calibers would offset it too.

Good call on the tape, but I am planning on painting them myself so I am guessing the tape would cost the same as the supplies to paint. But if I am unsure I can give that a try.
Red Caliper paint kit is sitting right next to me. Just waiting for warm weather and a weekend that I don't need/want (ya right) to drive the MINI.
What about a piece of red poster board? It'd be cheap and give a similar effect to the tape.
Be safe until you get those new tires mounted!

Ya I should try to photoshop the red in now that they are on the car. I am basically only driving to the tire shop once the tires arrive. I did use a torque wrench so I know they are at least on there at the right tension. I am lucky that the tires are set to arrive today when I don't have to be to work until 4.

I have decided to go with either duplicator high heat engine paint or rustolium enamel, both are actually an enamel paint with ceramic. I have read about doing this quite extensively on NAM. Mostly people who want the flat black look but the same products apply. Caliper paint would end up getting quite expensive and at that point almost should just go with powder coating. The cool thing with the spray enamel paints is that if it needs a touch up it is as easy as a little sandpaper and the can again. If I go powder coat the whole job would have to be done again. Caliper paint I would have to open a new can and waste a lot.
That is a good concern about the durability with the spray paint, and one person I know did this in Long Island so they get the salt during the winter also. Not to mention that these wheels are spring/summer/fall only so they shouldn't see much snow/salt. I will have some more time before it is warm enough to paint so I can keep looking at options.
