Fall gathering at Letchworth State Park?

Well, folks I haven't met any of you. I haven't seen your MINIs, but I have sort of lived vicareously through you as you prepared and executed the rally yesterday, and some of you headed to MOT this weekend. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my MINI (unfortunately, it'll be awhile). But as read of the comraderie on this board, I think it would be cool to do a fall gathering and have a chance for MINI friends and families to gather at least once more before winter takes hold.

So, I'm throwing out the idea of a WNY gathering at Letchworth State Park in middle-to-late September, when I presume the fall colors would be outstanding. I'm not really prepared to organize this event on my own, but would gladly join another WNYer or two to see what we can come up with. Right now, I'm thinking maybe a picnic lunch with a drive through the Park before or after. Of course, we'd likely have a few hundred of our best friends visiting that time of year, so the drive / tour might be a little frustrating (or not).

Anyway, what do people think? Any interest? Assuming there is interest, is anyone willing to work with me on organizing it? I do have a sick dog that might force me to bail on the whole thing (whole 'nother story), but for now, she's doing well and I'm hoping she can be (one of ) the belle(s) of the ball, so to speak.

Please let me know what you think and espcially let me know if you'd be willing to help out.

Thanks!

That would be great! I had a September drive to Letchworth, Stonybrook & the Mt Morris Dam a few years ago, but real foliage would be even better.

This sounds great, I popped the "question" to my fiancée at Lechworth so it is always a welcome drive.

If this were on a friday/saturday/sunday I'd be interested in attending for sure... not much I'd have time to do in terms of helping organize unfortunately though.

Anyone else interested?

I was thinking maybe the weekend of 9/27. I think the previous one is out for me. Hopefully the weekend of the 27th would be good timing for the fall colors (and surely my MINI will be here by then!).

Here's a link to NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation's website dealing with Letchworth for those that arent' familiar with it:  http://www.nysparks.com/parks/info.asp?parkID=12 .

My hubby and I would like to join. It depends on the day, though. It seems that this summer is quite busy for us for some odd reason.

We will hopefully be there also, not sure yet. This summer seems to be flying by and alot of our weekends are already taken. We just got back from Keuka Lake and had a wonderful time was not able to take ZIGGY which made me sad but ended up running into another couple that had a Mini Cooper and I introduced myself they were from West Virginia. My husband has his airplane rally at the Olean Airport this weekend I will be there working in the food tent with ZIGGY close by so if anyone is looking for something to do this weekend it is a fun time and lots of RC airplanes.

Whelp, today I got a call from Ray at Towne. A tad bit of a surprise to him and me but my MINI went into production this morning! FINALLY! I have wasted so many trips in my Subie (which I love; don't get me wrong); so many tirips I could have been motoring and I've been putzing. Well, not really putzing but you get the idea.

Anyway, with this jolt of good news, and skillfully having managed to keep my calendar clear for the 27th, I once again propose that we gather at Letchworth on September 27. Have a picnic, take a drive, and enjoy the beautiful fall scenery. I will figure out whether we need to reserve a spot, or just show up early.

I'm not terribly familiar with Letchworth though I have been there a couple times in the last five years. If anyone has an idea for a great spot for us to gather or Motor, please PM me or add to this post.

Ahh, I look forward to that Oxy Blue contrasting with the reds and yellows of the fall leaves...

Hope to see ya there!

Scott, Sue, Elroy, and OTIS! I will certainly keep you posted. I have to check the park regs, but I think / hope that dogs can participate with us. tedscar wouldn't be without Ted (aka Susie--OK, she's a little twisted) the terrier at the helm. She's our kid--we have no others, but of course, kids are welcome to our gathering also!

Oh boy! Now I find out that there are 3 things going on that day. When it rains it pours I tell ya! The Women's Blast shoot at Rochester Brooks, The Twisted Sisters Pig Roast for The Battered Women's Shelter, AND the MINI run.....hummmmm, what to do, what to do! I can live without the pig roast, even though we bought tickets - heck it's for charity. But, a chance to shoot Sporting Clays with a bunch of my friends, well that runs a close one with getting together with all of you. But if Otis can come... hmmmm, I think Scott will vote for the MINI run LOL! confused Keep me posted! Sue

I know, people think I'm crazy too - I throw my dog a birthday party every year. Last year - 15 dogs - 25 humans! Any excuse for a party! biggrin

Well, these are some quandrous times, aren't they? klownkrr Sue, be advised this is my first time making arrangements for a MINI gathering (heck, it'll be one of my first outings with my MINI. Well, no, by that time I should have had it for a month so I guess that's far from true). And the MINI 'run'--well depending on the park's popularity that day, it might be more of a 'walk'. I cut up through there one fall day a couple years ago and traffic was pretty s-l-o-w moving... I can't see it going too bad however it works out.

I do understand the enormity of these decisions; they all seem like admirable options. I can only bet that Otis votes for the MINI gathering as well. I'll be just darn pleased to meet you all and I hope it will be a great chance to mix it up w/ MINIs and MINIacs!

Birthday parties for dogs? Why not? 'Ted' the terrier thinks every day is her birthday, but she kind of scolds us if they're not all a 10. So I'm sure Otis is grateful for one dedicated all to him every year!

OK folks, since several of you seem interested in doing this, I've started looking into it a little more seriously. Reading up a little about Letchworth, I found the following (which will be important for those of us planning to bring dogs):

Pets: Household pets only; caged or on a leash not more than 6 feet. Proof of rabies inoculation. Not allowed in bathing areas, buildings or cabins.

So, I wanted everyone to be aware of this. I don't want anyone having to change their plans because they didn't know nor do I want anyone getting a ticket.

For those that don't know, 'Ted' is our terrier who happens to have Cushing's Disease. 'Tedscar' exists (or will exist) as a way of immortalizing her, to the extent we can. Leaving her behind for this outing is not an option. When I first conceived this idea of a gathering at Letchworth, I didn't imagine anything real formal, including dogs on 6ft. leashes. I realize it could be busy at the Park that weekend and that it's not realistic for the dogs to be running around like maniacs (or MINIacs). I would still love to do this event or something like it. With kids and dogs and other park visitors, a MINI run through / around the park might be a little challenging--maybe--I don't know.

What do you all think? Do you want to make Letchworth our destination or should we find another spot? Are you OK with meeting / picnicking there and holding off on a 'run' per se? For those that consider your pets part of the family and want to bring them along, how do these rules sit with you? I know it is a gorgeous spot (no pun intended) so I think we just have to weigh the tradeoffs. Fortunately, there's still time to make alternate plans if need be.

Please take a moment to jot down your thoughts and we can go from there.

Thanks!

Also they didn't ask to see any proof of vaccination, but it's a good thing to have when there are so many people and other animals around.

I'm cool with a leisurely drive and a picnic, and just getting out to enjoy a (knock on wood) nice fall day.

Now Lauren, wedding plans can be changed (or we could all be in the wedding party at Letchworth!). I suppose if you want we could hold the gathering in your neck of the woods--NAH, I think we better stick with Letchworth. After all, Ted has a date with Otis!

One suggestion, every year, for me the last 23, my father the last 47, we go apple picking at one of two orchards just a minute from letchworth, we then go to letchworth and relax for the day. Most of the time there is around 15 of us, different families and couples. Anyways at letchworth we always take a walk up to the train bridge, cross the bridge and hike down the side to the base and look over the edge.

Its a shame I too have a wedding that day, the next day is when we will be apple picking and heading to letchworth.
