How long will a Mini run without oil?
Permalink Closed

Get this. As some of you know we took delivery of our Cooper S last thursday. On the 2nd day we took the car and showed my parents. My father was outside the car when it was running and notice a faint tick. I gave it little thought since it was faint at idle and being new I thought a lifter might just need a fine adjustment. Today I steped out of the car and listened to it after a short drive. It was much louder. Hmm.. strange I thought. Let it sit about 5 mins and opened the hood. Guess what I found on the dip stick? Nothing ... not even a spray of oil. Well it is late and the store is closed so I will take care of it in the AM. But now I am thinking 600 miles wife driving most of it. I only hope it is just below the stick and only needs around 2 quarts and no damage done. Follow up here tomarrow.

I'd strongly advise not getting the oil yourself but call Towne first thing.

Get their recommendations on what to do. The car is brand new and should not be low on oil. If necessary get MINI to transport the car back to the dealer so this can be diagnosed.

Also, at least on the older model MINI, the oil, especailly when new, was / is very difficult to see on the dipstick and could be mistaken for there being no oil in the sump. Another reason to call Towne before putting any more oil in the car.

Also, the ticking noise at idle is normal for the new turbo engines, I believe it's the fuel injectors but you should ask about this as well.

My apologies to the World of Mini people. I have worked on cars, trucks and motorcycles for most of the last 30 plus years. I have never had an engine that started with synthetic oil. Last night I checked the oil and saw nothing on a shop cloth with a maglight.

This morning I use the sun and a white paper towel. Guess now what I found? OIL!!! Ok, so what one of you came over here in the middle of the night and filled it.boy that service dept works fast. LOL. As far as the ticking. I will still have that looked at. It seems loader then the demos we drove.

Ok so I beg forgiveness and also ask that this topic be taken off or at least closed.

ya the R56 S has a very noisy motor. Rattles like a diesel in the winter, ticks like its going to explode because of the direct injection.

I also have noticed the oil is hard to see on the dipstick. I'm glad it worked out! (Which reminds me, I need to check my oil...)
