Need Tire Tutoring

Thank you everyone for your opinons on the checkered roof and mirror caps business. My final analysis is that I may be more of a dork than I knew. Now, I'm about to make a decision, but have one last concern: tires.

My wife is concerned about the possible "stiff ride" effects of the runflat tires. I think I'm going to go with the 16" wheels on the MINI-S and I'm not opting for the sport suspension. So, I'm guessing that if I go with the all season tires the ride will be a little softer than if I got the performance tires (and it will be cheaper not to have to get the snows in the winter). So, even if if it's true that the ride will be a little less stiff with the all season tires, is it stupid to get them (kind of like a seat belt on a motorcycle)? Also, are the all seasons really OK for snow - or would I wind up getting snow tires anyway (in which case, I'd be wishing I'd gotten the performance tires for the summer)?

Thanks again for all this collective wisdom here.

I have not driven my MINI in the snow but those that I have spoken with on the subject always  suggest that four snows is the best way to go.  Most go with the 15" steel wheel / Blizzak combination from Tire Rack.

Thanks Brewmeister. Unfortunately, I don't have the garage space to not drive it in the winter (the Road Star motorcycle is already taking up too much space). I'd like to be able to use the S on some road trips and my wife already gets a little car-sick, so I'm wanting to minimize the "bumps" - although I realize that's contrary to the usual, wanting the feel of the road.

Getting close to ordering......still think I'm going with the black stripes on red, with the (some say "dorky") checkers.

All season tires can be thought of as "no season" tires as they are more or a less a compromise. They would probably be OK in the snow but they can't compare to a set of dedicated winter tires, especially those with a hydrophilic ('water loving') compound such as Blizzaks. As mentioned above Tire Rack has winter tire packages including 15" steel wheels which will save having to have tires switched over / mounted / balanced twice per year.

With winter tires the MINI is surprisingly good in the snow - a little tank. Only thing to watch for is depth as since the car is so low it doesn't take a lot of snow to become a snowplow.
