so it's about 3:35 am and Mark's key fob for the FJ beeps and he thinks it's a low battery so he gets up to take care of it. a couple of seconds later he comes back in the room and turns the light on, "hon, i think there's someone in the FJ"
He goes and looks a little closer out the back window and tells me to call 911 - some guy was actually in the Mini
Mark goes outside and scares the guy out of the car and the guy takes off down the street. Mark checks out both cars and they appear to be fine. it looks like this a$$hole got into the glove box and the secret compartment (so much for being a secret!), the GPS unit and some other glove box stuff was on the floor but thankfully there was nothing in there that this guy wanted.
It appears that we lucked out, no damage to either car and nothing was taken. I am glad that the FJ was locked and was blocking the Mini in. You can bet we're both (especially me) going to be extra vigilant about making sure the cars are locked in the future!

i guess the door was unlocked; which is actually good because there was no damage...

At first I thought you were going to say that the guy just wanted to see what it was like to sit in a MINI. Glad you had no damage. What part of Rochester are you? I'm in Victor and I never think to lock the car in the driveway.
So in the light of day - we could see that it looks like they pried open the glove box in the FJ and took a $2 scratch off ticket from in there. They did take our Motorola radios out of the Mini But still, things could have been worse.
Doc - We're in the very northwest of the city, on the Rochester/Greece line, for the most part our neighborhood is decent but we're definitely planning on moving to the east side suburbs as soon as we can.

Oh, wow! I'm glad that there was no serious damage to either of your vehicles. My old Honda Civic was broken into when I was in Syracuse, and it ended up frying the electrical and circuit boards in the car. I took it in to the shop 11 times to get fixed, and finally they told me that they had to rewire the whole car, so I had to give it up, which was very sad for me. We live in Walworth, and one of my coworker's cars was stolen right out of her driveway just down the road from us in Penfield. My house inspector lives in Webster, and had two cars stolen out of his driveway. I'm afraid to say that there may not be a safe place to live anymore :(. But layers of security are always better. I leave my car locked in my garage (which is locked) every night. And whenever I have to go back to Syracuse, I drive Brian's car!!

One reason I had to buy a new car, which turned out to be Little Em'ly, the sharpest looking Cooper on Island Park Drive (not hard to do, that one), was just before my wife & I moved to Grand Island from the fine city of Niagara Falls, aka The Bride's Second Biggest Disappointment. My old jeep Grand C. was stolen out of my driveway, while I was downstairs and awake! Imagine the look on my face when I went outside to go to work in the morning.
I called a friend from work, who is a part-time cop, and who lives on the local Indian Reservation. He said, "Yup, sounds familiar. I'll go look where they normally torch 'em on the rez." Now, get this. The night before, my wife and I had been to the mortgage guy's office, and every single important paper I had with the exception of my US passport was on the front seat. I barely knew this cop, and he found the car, un-torched, had somebody come and tow it out of the ravine it was in, and then, the next evening, went with his wife and children and some flashlights, and found (in the dark!!!!!!) virtually every piece of paper I had lost. He brought them to work the next morning. I was stunned.
The car was able to be fixed well enough to drive, but shortly after the move to this semi-ritzy neighborhood I live in (and will moving from) I realized how truly bad it looked, and, realizing I no longer lived in Niagara Falls, the Failed Business Capital of the World, I should get something better. I liked the MINI so much in The Italian Job, and my wife talked me into buying one, long story short.
I like the neighborhood I live in now, you can leave your doors unlocked, the garage door open all night, I'm next door to a park, which my dog loves, but since Mary passed away, I have a lot less income, and need to move. Oh, well, pray to St Joseph for me, everybody, even if you don't believe.
Did you hear about the dyslexic agnostic? He wasn't sure he believed in Dog.
that's an amazing story Dave! I hope your house sells easily - my parents had to put our old house on the market 3 times before it sold. Luckily that third time was the charm
